Dreaming Beyond Limits: Naman’s Journey

Background and Challenge

Naman Bhattacharjee is a bright and curious young person who enjoys music, food, travel, and technology. He has a strong memory, an ability to observe emotions around him, and a keen interest in sounds, gadgets, and cooking.

However, like many young people with developmental disabilities, Naman experienced barriers in communication, social participation, and navigating unfamiliar environments. Situations such as loud voices, crowded spaces, or sudden changes in routine could cause anxiety. He also found it difficult to express pain or complex feelings verbally.

These challenges often limited opportunities for Naman to participate fully in everyday activities and to explore his interests in ways that could build confidence and independence.

Key Steps in Naman’s Journey

With consistent support from his family and facilitators, Naman began developing practical and communication skills.

He started using assistive communication tools, including the Awaz app and simple messaging through WhatsApp, initially using emojis and visual cues. These tools helped him express choices and connect with others more easily.

At the same time, Naman began learning daily living skills, including preparing simple foods such as chai, soup, and noodles using an induction stove. These experiences helped him take on more meaningful roles within his family life.

His interests in music and technology were also encouraged. Naman began creating his own playlists and exploring the idea of mixing music. Physical activity and travel experiences were introduced to build his confidence and resilience.

Through supported travel experiences, including trips to Agra and Dehradun, Naman expanded his comfort with new environments and developed greater independence.

Emerging Outcomes

Today, Naman is growing into a confident young person who is increasingly able to participate in daily life and express his preferences.

Some of the key changes observed include:

  • Increased confidence in communicating through digital tools
  • Greater independence in simple cooking and daily routines
  • Improved comfort in exploring new environments
  • Development of personal interests in music, travel, and fashion
  • Strengthened social connections with family, facilitators, and peers

Most importantly, Naman is beginning to envision meaningful roles for himself in the future, including becoming a music mixer, traveller, model, or food blogger.

A Major Intervention

Through Ashish Foundation’s Person-Centered Planning and Personal Futures Planning process, Naman’s family, facilitators, and teachers came together to identify his strengths, interests, and aspirations. Rather than focusing on limitations, the team explored how Naman could be supported to take on valued social roles and participate meaningfully in his community.

The planning process identified several key strengths:

  • Strong visual and kinesthetic learning ability
  • Excellent memory and attention to detail
  • Deep interest in music, technology, and cooking
  • Ability to follow routines and instructions
  • Curiosity about travel and exploration

Based on these strengths, a structured support plan was developed to help Naman build skills in communication, independence, and community participation.

Impact

Naman’s journey demonstrates the power of strengths-based, person-centered support. When opportunities are built around a person’s interests and abilities, young people with disabilities can develop competence, confidence, and valued roles in their communities.

For Naman and his family, the change has been profound. The focus has shifted from managing challenges to building a future filled with possibility, participation, and dignity.
